Revivals, including 'Ocean's Eleven,' are among the new movies in Milwaukee this weekend

The end of the year is all about traditions; one of the movies’ traditions is to end the year with no new movies opening in theaters.

But there are a few new options to check out this week.

Here's what’s new in Milwaukee-area theaters starting Friday, as well as some of the new movies available on streaming and on demand this week.

‘Four Rooms’ and ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ at Times Cinema

The Times Cinema’s repertory format brings two very different ensemble action sort-of comedies to the west side theater this week. “Four Rooms,” an off-the-rails 1995 collection of stories set in the same hotel directed by four different filmmakers (Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Alexandre Rockwell, Allison Anders), is showing at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 30-Jan. 1 and Jan. 5; tickets are $11. “Ocean’s Eleven,’ the very charming heist comedy with a cast including George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt, is showing at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 31-Jan. 1 and 6:30 p.m. Jan. 4; tickets are $10. ‘The Subtle Art of Not Giving a #@%!’ at Majestic Cinema

Mark Manson’s no-nonsense, humorous self-help book "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a #@%!," in which he skewers our obsession with the pursuit of happiness, has been turned into a documentary, which is getting a one-night-only run in select theaters, including Marcus Theatres’ Majestic Cinema at 7 p.m. Jan. 4. Opening Dec. 23: ‘Babylon’

Short version: In 1920s Hollywood, just before everything goes from silent to sound, the lives of rising stars, fading stars, gangsters, movie moguls and just about everything else (even elephants) spin out of control in Damien Chazelle’s (“La La Land”) celebration and stripping down of the Dream Factory. The star-soaked cast includes Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, Tobey Maguire, Jean Smart and many, many more. Justin Hurwitz, a Nicolet High School grad and Chazelle’s longtime collaborator, wrote the score for this three-hour epic.

Opening Dec. 23: ‘Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody’

Short version: Speaking of rise-and-fall stories, Naomi Ackie plays pop diva Whitney Houston in this music biopic tragedy written by “Bohemian Rhapsody’s” screenwriter and directed by Kasi Lemmons (“Harriett,” “Black Nativity”). Stanley Tucci, Ashton Sanders, Tamara Tunie and Clarke Peters co-star.

“January 6th": Award-winning filmmakers Gédéon and Jules Naudet (“9/11,” “November 13: Attack on Paris”) combine live footage with original interviews with police, members of Congress and staffers from both sides of the aisle to tell the story of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection and attack on the Capitol. On discovery+ Jan. 5.

“House of Grucci”: This documentary tells the story of the Gruccis, a Long Island family with one of the world’s biggest and oldest fireworks businesses. On Hulu Jan. 2.
