The Vanguard, 2659 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., tops fries with kimchi, black and white sesame seeds, green onion and mango-chile sauce for a tangy-sweet-spicy effect. It also serves kimchi on a hot dog.

Another national publication has decided Milwaukee is suddenly noteworthy ahead of the Democratic National Convention in July.

Eater included Milwaukee in an article highlighting 19 of "the most dynamic food cities in the world right this second."

"Whether it’s Pristina — Kosovo has the youngest population in Europe — where chefs are using food to establish a new national identity ... or — and trust us here — Milwaukee, where the forthcoming Democratic National Convention has put the cheese-curd city on its toes, these are the places you want to eat now," the article states.

Good City Brewing's downtown location across from the Fiserv Forum opened in early 2019.

The article mentions some Milwaukee clichés including "blue collar," "Rust Belt," cheese and beer, with the growth of craft breweries and possible extension of the city's bar time to 4 a.m. for the convention, but fails to mention custard — a travesty, indeed. The article does allude to local specialties including "pierogies or Pisco sours, goulash or James Beard-level gastronomy."

The article's "must-visit" pick for Milwaukee was The Vanguard, in the city's Bay View neighborhood.

Eater, a food and dining website owned by Vox Media, compiled the list by consulting its network of writers around the world. Oakland, Calif., was the only other U.S. spot to make the list, which included cities from Monterrey, Mexico, to Marseille, France.

Milwaukee has been making a handful of "best of" travel lists ahead of the DNC, including in Forbes, the Wall Street Journal and Airbnb. The New York Times also visited the city for its 36-hours travel series.
