GREEN BAY – Christian Watson has been ruled out of Monday night’s game at the New York Giants, an absence the Green Bay Packers top receiver foreshadowed this week.

Watson injured his right hamstring late in last week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. He did not practice this week. Before the injury, Watson had emerged as the Packers top receiver, catching 14 passes for 186 yards and four touchdowns during the team’s three-game winning streak, but other playmakers have ascended during the same stretch.

Coach Matt LaFleur said it’s unfortunate timing for Watson, but he’s confident in younger playmakers – such as rookies Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks and tight end Tucker Kraft – picking up the slack.

“Obviously, Christian is a big part of our offense,” LaFleur said. “And he’s really, I think, kind of hit his groove. So that’s obviously not great, because it took him a minute to get kind of going within our system this year, and it’s a shame. He made so many great plays these last few weeks, but I feel good about the other guys. I think they’re really developed, and we’ve got a lot of guys we can move in different spots to pick up for that loss.

“So when one guy’s not there, it’s an opportunity for the rest of the group. I think those guys are ready for that challenge.”

LaFleur said linebacker Quay Walker is doubtful for Monday’s game. He listed cornerback Jaire Alexander, safety Darnell Savage and cornerback Eric Stokes as questionable. It’s possible, LaFleur said, Stokes could be activated off injured reserve before Monday, but the coach stopped short of calling that his team’s plan.

Alexander is trying to return from a shoulder injury that has cost him the past four games. He practiced all last week but did not play against the Chiefs. Alexander has played only five games this season.

“I think we’re all frustrated about it, to be honest with you,” LaFleur said. “But it is what it is.”

While the Packers offense will be without Watson, it’s possible running back Aaron Jones could return against the Giants. Jones is listed as questionable after missing the past two games with a sprained MCL.

LaFleur said earlier this week the field turf at MetLife Stadium won’t be a consideration for whether Jones can return from the knee injury.
