Former Packers kicker Mason Crosby keeps putting out audition tapes on social media in hopes of getting another NFL opportunity

For any NFL team or general manager wondering, Mason Crosby hasn't stopped kicking.

And the Packers' all-time great appears ready for any team to pick up the phone and give him a call ahead of the 2023 season.

As players have been auditioning to make NFL rosters ahead of cutdown day over the last couple of months, Crosby has been doing the same through his own audition tapes.

He continued with a couple more recently, kicking over a soccer net and drilling one at a local football field in another. Crosby, wearing a shirt that said Dad Szn, noted in his most recent video, "It’s always dad season. Got to keep preparing for football season, too.” His caption read "I ain’t hard 2 find!” The post was accompanied by DJ Khaled’s "All I Do Is Win" song.

The videos are something you would see from an overlooked high school player looking to catch the eye of a college football coach — not necessarily a veteran NFL kicker who needs no introduction.

But after the Packers did not resign Crosby this offseason and went with rookie Anders Carlson instead, the kicker remains unsigned.

How long was Mason Crosby on the Packers?

Crosby was on the Packers for 16 seasons. Last year, he was the second-longest tenured player on the roster, behind only Aaron Rodgers.

He made 12 game-winning kicks during his illustrious career and holds the record for longest field goal in franchise history at 58 yards in 2011. His 385 field goals made are also first by a wide margin (Ryan Longwell is second with 226).

Crosby said when the 2022 season ended he had no plans to retire but as the Packers re-signed other players in the offseason the kicker wasn't one of them.

“I still want to keep playing,” Crosby said following the team's season-ending loss to the Detroit Lions Jan. 8. “I don’t have any plans on tying them up. So my plan is to just kind of keep pushing, and kind of look at how I want to work through the offseason to try to give it another go.”

It just wasn't going to be with the Packers. That became clear when they selected Carlson in the sixth round of the NFL draft in April.

It was the first time since the Packers drafted Crosby in 2007 that the team has picked a kicker in the draft.

Carlson is a perfect 4 for 4 on field goals in three preseason games but has missed three extra points (6 of 9).

And his kicks during training camp practices have been inconsistent, leaving many on social media to clamor for Crosby to return.

However, his 57-yard field goal during Saturday's preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks may have quieted that crowd for now.

Why did the Packers not resign Mason Crosby?

Age was likely the big factor — he turns 39 on Sept. 3 — and while he rebounded in 2022 after a rough 2021 season, it's clear his length on kickoffs has diminished.

Of his 74 kickoffs, only 15 were touchbacks (20.3%), the lowest percentage since his 2010 season.

That was down significantly from just three years earlier when he booted a career-high 62.0% of his kickoffs for touchbacks. But his percentage has decreased each year since — 58.5% in 2020 and 45.7% in 2021 before the big dropoff last year.

What were Anders Carlson's stats at Auburn?

On the other hand, the Packers are getting a younger leg in Carlson who should be able to keep kick returners from returns.

In five seasons at Auburn, Carlson had 184 of 312 kickoffs go for touchbacks (59%).

The 25-year-old also made 71.8% of his field goals and 98.3% of his extra points. His 79 made field goals are second most in school history.

Whether that success will translate into Lambeau Field when the weather turns and across NFL stadiums is to be determined.

If Anders needs any pointers about the NFL, his older brother would be the perfect mentor.

Daniel Carlson, who is entering his sixth season in the NFL, has the third best field goal percentage in NFL history. The 28-year-old has played most of his career with the Las Vegas Raiders. After making 34 of 37 field goals he earned first-team All-Pro honors for the first time.

Packers special teams coach Rich Bisaccia also worked with Daniel Carlson when he was in the same role with the Raiders for several years.
